It’s probably a knock-on effect from the current sweep of Noughties nostalgia overtaking fashion—exposed G-strings, velour tracksuits, slogan hats… Men's/Women/s UGG Sneakers were the unofficial off-duty uniform of A-listers in the years 2001 through 2004, worn by everyone from Sarah Jessica Parker to J.Lo, Britney Spears, and Paris Hilton. In analysing those images I tried to make sense of what their appeal was back then—convinced, as I always am, that fashion trends are largely signifiers for shifts in the way we understand pop culture.



And yet I struggled to find one—the thing that makes Uggs remarkable is that they’re entirely unremarkable. I remember seeing pre-TMZ paparazzi shots of Kate Hudson and Kate Moss wearing them, the former with a boho dress and the latter with jeans. It was one of those moments you say to yourself, “There is absolutely no logical reason why I love and need these, but I do, I really, really do.”

Ms. O’Donnell admits that the brand is “in the early stages” of converting men to UGG Sneakers For Sale. The goals include persuading more influencers to post photos of themselves wearing the shoes on social media or to venture out in public strategically shod as bait for the paparazzi. Ugg targets everyone from “micro influencers”—those with under 10,000 devoted Instagram followers—to celebrities, including rapper Lil Yachty, whose follower counts are in the millions. In exchange for passively advocating Uggs, these influencers get product, or, if their audience is robust, money.

The story of Shop UGG Sneakers began, incongruously, on the beach. The boots emerged in the 1970s amongst Australian surfers, who embraced them as a comfy and warm post-surfing footwear fix. Brian Smith, one Australian surfer living in Santa Monica, California, saw that they were catching on in the US and began importing the boots from Australia, selling them to local surf shops and out of a van at surf competitions. He later set up Ugg Holdings Inc in Southern California, where the company is still based, and registered the Ugg trademark.
